FIFTH COLVMN RECORDS ¥ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Version 1.0 - November 1995

This file serves as a reference for anyone who wishes to learn more
about FIFTH COLVMN Records. Please keep in mind there is little
separation between FIFTH COLVMN and CHEMLAB in the early stages of the
label. This FAQ is presented as a chronology. THIS IS DRAFT ONE V 1.0 -
SEND QUESTIONS/COMMENTS/SUGGESTIONS TO: FifthCovlmn@cyberden.com or
fcolvmn@aol.com Here goes...

* 1990 * The first release on FIFTH CO LVMN Records was TEN TON PRESSURE
by CHEMLAB released in the late fall of 1990. This marked the "official"
beginning of the label as a public entity. At this time the label had no
official or exclusive distribution. FIFTH COLVMN Records was founded by
Zalman Fishman (also owner of the Wash. DC EuroTrash NightClub FIFTH
COLVMN). A twist of fate put CHEMLAB at Zalman's footsteps as he was
preparing to start a label. The rest as they say is history... Jared
and/or Chemlab DO NOT own FIFTH COLVMN Recor ds. It is important to note
however that Jared (of CHEMLAB) has been the labels General Manager
since it was founded. Jared had a long and respectable reputation in the
music industry from his days as the promoter of Wash. DC's famous 9:30
Club. It w as from this base that Jared made contact with members of
various bands (Puppy, Ministry, Nails, Etc...) and music business
associates.

* 1991 * Early in the winter of 1991 CHEMLAB was invited by Trent Reznor
of NINE INCH NAILS to open one of NIN's f irst ever headlining shows at
the RITZ in NYC. Following CHEMLAB's performance Trent asked the band to
continue the tour to Chicago. In Chicago CHEMLAB was asked to continue
the rest of the tour to Los Angeles. This single event established both
CHEMLAB and FIFTH COLVMN Records.

* 1992 * Following the tour with NINE INCH NAILS there was music
industry wide recognition of both CHEMLAB and FIFTH COLVMN RECORDS. The
label was sought out by, and ultimately signed a distribution agreement
with METAL BLA DE Records for CHEMLAB's next release BURN OUT AT THE
HYDROGEN BAR.

* 1993 * Released in June of 1993, BURN OUT AT THE HYDROGEN BAR by
CHEMLAB was the labels second offering. The release was highly
anticipated and shipped record numbers for both ME TAL BLADE and FIFTH
COLVMN. CHEMLAB quickly gained more cult status and popularity. Under
the METAL BLADE umbrella CHEMLAB toured during the Summer of 1993 with
METAL BLADE aggro-metal-rock outfit SKREW on the ALTERNATIVE PRESS
MAGAZINE sponsored "In dustrialized Nations Tour". CHEMLAB would tour in
the late fall of 1993 with WHITE ZOMBIE . Just prior to this tour with
WHITE ZOMBIE , the band would spend four days in Los Angeles, filming
the video of CODEINE , GLUE & YOU on the sets built for th e feature
motion picture DOUBLE DRAGON starring Allisa Millano. During
Thanksgiving weekend of 1993 MTV starts airing the video AMAZING by
superock band AEROSMITH. In the closing segment of the "Virtual Reality"
based video a CHEMLAB "logo" poster is promintely placed. Many fans
pick-up on this disgusting fact. CHEMLAB threatens to sue AEROSMITH. All
is quite by the new year.

* 1994 * During the spring of 1994 CHEMLAB would win the support slot on
the ANGST FEST TOUR sandwiched between KMFDM an d SISTER MACHINE GUN in
the set. During the summer of 1994 FIFTH COLVMN would put plans into
place to build the label beyond CHEMLAB. The label philosophy was to
create an environment for "electronic oriented" musicians to find a home
and release musi c with the support of a nationally distributed label.
The label found a home with CAROLINE DISTRIBUTION for all releases
EXCEPT CHEMLAB which (at this time) is still governed by METAL BLADE. In
the late fall of 1994 the label signed HALOBLACK, ACUME N and PERCEPTUAL
OUTER DIMENSIONS (POD). Just prior to the release of these landmark
projects CRAIG ALBERTSON, one of the labels core and influential figures
passed away from an unintentional drug overdose. CRAIG had personally
signed both ACUMEN and POD to the label and had also generated the
artwork for CHEMLAB's Magnetic Fields Remixes and POD's debut "Journey
To The Planet POD". The label regrouped and moved on in Craig's memory.

* 1995 * The most aggressive year ever in the labels history. Armed with
split distribution between METAL BLADE and CAROLINE the label signed and
released 19 recordings from sources as varied and respected as LUC VAN
ACKER (MINISTRY/ Rev Co) , BLACK LUNG (SNOG side project) , OXYGEINE 23
(DIE WARZAU Side Projec t) , BLACK RAIN, DESSAU, IPECAC LOOP, INISGHT
23, MAX M, CYBER-TEC PROJECT (Jean-Luc Demeyer of FRONT 242) and many
others. ACUMEN would tour once with RECONSTRICTION artists CLAY PEOPLE
and later in the year with PAVEMENT MUSIC artists CRAWL. HALOBL ACK
would tour with BILE and VIrus 23. Both ACUMEN and HALOBLACK would play
the 1995 CMJ MUSIC MARATHON in NYC with CLEOPATRA RECORDS Recording
artists THE ELECTRIC HELLFIRE CLUB and SPAHN RANCH. In the late fall
DESSAU tours with PIGFACE the indus trial music supergroup...
